Why do I shake during yoga poses?

Mister.Yoga — Yoga Q&A

Lia

Hi everyone, I’m pretty new to yoga (about 2 months). I keep noticing that I shake during yoga poses, especially in chair pose, warrior II, planks, and sometimes even during downward dog when the teacher holds it longer. It’s not like I’m cold, it feels more like my legs or arms are vibrating and I get embarrassed in class because I worry people can see it.

I’m not trying to push super hard, but I do want to get stronger. I also have an office job and my legs feel weak sometimes. Is shaking in yoga normal? Is it a sign I’m doing the pose wrong, or is it just my muscles getting tired? Any tips for how to stop shaking during yoga poses (or at least not panic)?

Ananda

Yes, it can be very normal, Lia. In yoga we are not only moving muscles; we are meeting the flow of prana (life energy) and the mind’s reactions. Shaking often appears when the body is learning a new pattern, when muscles awaken, or when the nervous system is releasing held tension.

Try softening the face and jaw, and guide the breath into the belly and ribs. Long exhalations calm the mind and help energy move smoothly. If you feel the shake increase with fear, that’s a sign to step back a little, find steadiness (sthira) and ease (sukha). In time, as your breath and attention become steady, the trembling usually reduces.

Giulia

Totally normal tbh 😄✨ Shaking during yoga poses is usually just your muscles going “uhhh hello?? we’re working!” Chair + warriors + plank are basically strength training.

A few quick hacks:

- Micro-bend + don’t lock joints

- Shorten your stance / take a lower variation

- Breathe slower (exhale longer)

- Don’t stare at the shake like it’s a problem—keep your drishti (focus) steady

And babe, no one is judging. Everyone shakes at some point. It’s literally your glow-up loading 💅🧘‍♀️

Ravi

Shaking is usually fatigue and poor alignment.

Check:

1) Feet grounded. Weight even.

2) Knees track over toes. No collapse inward.

3) Core engaged. Ribs not flaring.

4) Shoulders down. Neck long.

5) Breathe. Do not hold breath.

Reduce intensity. Hold shorter. Repeat. Build capacity.

Oh sweetheart, yes… shaking in yoga poses can be so common 💜🙂 It’s often your body saying “this is new” or “I’m working hard.” And it can also be stress leaving the system little by little.

If you feel safe doing so, try:

- Coming out of the pose sooner (no shame!)

- Taking child’s pose for a few breaths 🫶

- Softening your belly and slowing your exhale 🌬️

- Adding more gentle/yin classes to balance the strong holds 🕯️

If shaking comes with pain, dizziness, or feels alarming, please check with a teacher in person or a health professional just to be safe 💕

Enzo

Congrats, you’re doing actual work instead of filming “effortless” warriors for Instagram 😏🔥 Real yoga isn’t posing for the feed.

Shaking = muscles + nervous system + you holding a pose longer than your body can currently support. That’s called training. Scale it. Bend the knees. Shorten the hold. And maybe ignore influencers who pretend they never tremble 😆

Pippo

Omg I’m the same 😭🫣 I started like 3 weeks ago and my legs shake in chair pose soooo much. I always think I’m doing it wrong. Do you think it could be like… my breathing? Because I notice I kinda stop breathing when it gets hard 😅

Also random: does a thicker yoga mat help with shaking or is that just for knees/wrists? 🙈

Nico

Shaking is often motor unit recruitment + fatigue + sympathetic nervous system activation. Yoga is basically isometrics + balance + breath control.

What helped me reduce it:

- Track sleep (7.5–9h). Poor sleep tanks neuromuscular control.

- Don’t train hard on low carbs + high stress days (cortisol up = more tremor for some people).

- Nasal breathing and longer exhales to shift toward parasympathetic.

- Progress like strength work: shorter holds, more sets.

If it’s sudden, one-sided, or happens outside training, I’d get it checked.

Mimi

Liaaaa the shake can be like your body releasing stuck vibes 😭💕 like energy going WHOOSH thru your legs!! Sometimes when I do warrior my root chakra is like “we awake now” 🌙✨

Try grounding stuff: imagine roots from your feet, breathe slow, maybe hold a lil crystal (black tourmaline / hematite) near your mat hehe 🥹🔮 and drink water. You’re not broken, you’re upgradinggg 💗

Dario

In hot yoga, shaking is basically a daily event 😅 When the room is warm and you’re holding strength poses, your muscles fatigue faster and your brain is like “stabilize!!”

My tips:

- Don’t lock out joints—micro-bend helps control

- Focus on steady breathing, not “winning” the hold

- Hydrate + electrolytes (but don’t overdo water)

- Build tolerance gradually

If you’re shaking plus feeling faint, step out and cool down.

Sara

Lia, shaking during yoga poses can be normal, but I always like to add: if you’re pregnant (or might be), be extra gentle and don’t push through trembling 🥰🤍

In pregnancy we often choose wider stances, shorter holds, and lots of breath-led movement. If anything feels unstable, come out, rest, and ask the teacher for a modification 🙏

And for anyone: if shaking comes with dizziness, pain, or you feel unwell, please pause and check in with a professional 🌸

Orazio

People think it’s “just muscles,” but there’s more. The body is basically an antenna. When you hold certain asanas, you’re changing your frequency and the nervous system starts recalibrating.

That shaking can be an awakening response—especially when breath + focus activate the third eye pathway. Ancient practices were designed to unlock what modern life suppresses. Just don’t force it. Stay hydrated, breathe slow, and listen to the signals.

Zenio

When the wind meets a new tree,

it trembles.

Stay. Breathe.

Soften.

Vale

Yep, totally a thing. Coming from CrossFit: shaking in yoga poses feels like the same “stabilizers are dying” moment in a heavy squat 😅🏋️‍♀️🧘‍♀️

Warrior/Chair/Plank are basically isometric holds. If your hips/ankles are tight from sitting, your body compensates and shakes more.

What worked for me:

- Shorter holds + better form

- Add glute/quad strength (air squats, split squats)

- Mobility for ankles/hips

If it’s sharp pain though, nope out and ask the coach/teacher.

Claudia

Shaking is super common, especially in long holds. I used to panic too 😅🫶 Now I just treat it as “my body is building support.”

Practical stuff that helped:

- A grippy mat (less slipping = less shaking). I love a premium one even if it’s pricey 🙈

- Wearing leggings that don’t slide so I’m not constantly adjusting

- Using blocks in poses like down dog or lunges to reduce strain

And honestly, a calm playlist + soft lighting at home made me less nervous, which reduced the shakiness too ✨

Kiran

Shaking can arise when the nadis (energy channels) begin to clear and the pranic flow increases. In Kundalini we sometimes see spontaneous kriyas—small tremors or waves—when the system is opening.

If the shaking feels overwhelming, return to a simple rhythm: inhale and exhale through the nose, steady and even. You may also practice a gentle mantra like “Sat Nam” internally to anchor the mind.

Always keep it grounded: stability in the pelvis, softness in the heart, and no forcing. If anything feels unsafe, stop and seek guidance from a qualified teacher.

Fede

My legs shake in chair pose like they’re trying to send Morse code to the universe 🫠📡

I’ve accepted it as part of the “yoga journey”: step 1 breathe, step 2 shake, step 3 pretend it’s intentional, step 4 collapse gracefully 😭🧘‍♀️

But yeah, usually it’s just muscles working. Taking breaks is 100% allowed.

Luca

Shaking is very common when we hold a position and the muscles are building strength and balance. It happens to many people of all ages.

A gentle way to train without overloading is to practice the same shapes with support:

- Chair pose: lightly hold the back of a chair

- Warrior: shorten your stance and hold a wall for balance

- Plank: do it with hands on a chair or countertop

Work in short holds (10–20 seconds), rest, then repeat. Slow breathing helps.

Priya

From a yoga + Ayurveda lens, shaking during yoga poses can show up when the body is depleted, over-stimulated, or when vata (air element) is high—common with busy schedules and lots of sitting.

Supportive ideas (gentle, not medical):

- Warm up longer before holds

- Favor warm meals and warm herbal teas (ginger, tulsi, or cumin-fennel-coriander) 🍵

- Don’t practice intense holds when you’re hungry or very stressed

- End with a longer savasana to settle the nervous system

If shaking feels extreme or new, it’s wise to speak to a professional.

Teo

Ok but like… how fast can we get rid of the shaking 😤😂 I want my holds to be CLEAN.

Lia, if it’s strength-based shaking, can we speedrun progress by doing daily chair holds + planks? Like 5 sets a day? Also does protein help? 💪😅

Iris

I used to shake a lot, especially when people were watching. For me it was partly muscle fatigue and partly anxiety (my nervous system was always on high alert) 🥺🌿

What helped:

- Putting my mat in the back corner so I felt less “seen”

- Choosing a modification before I hit the panic point

- Breathing out longer than breathing in

Over time, as yoga helped my anxiety, the shaking reduced. You’re not embarrassing, you’re human 🫶

Matteo

In the Yoga Sutras, practice is described as steady effort over time (abhyasa) with a spirit of non-attachment (vairagya). Shaking during yoga poses can be read through that lens: the body-mind meets intensity, and the surface ripples.

Rather than labeling it “wrong,” ask: can I keep the breath smooth? Can I soften the struggle while maintaining honest effort? If not, the wise move is to modify. The goal isn’t a perfect shape, but clarity and steadiness of attention.

Ale

I had this alot before I went on a retreat in Bali 😅🌴 when you shake during yoga poses its usually your body like releasing stress + building strength.

Try doing a slow morning routine: warm lemon water, 10 min breathwork, then flow. Also do a digital detox at night, it helps your nervous system sooo much.

And don’t feel bad in class, everybody is focus on themselfs 🧘‍♀️✨

Silvio

Common causes: muscle fatigue, balance demands, and breath holding.

Any evidence? Studies on isometric exercise show increased tremor with fatigue. Yoga research also supports breathing/relaxation effects on stress.

Questions:

1) Does it stop when you shorten the hold?

2) Does it happen only in certain poses?

3) Any pain, numbness, dizziness?

If symptoms are unusual, talk to a clinician.

Noemi

I shook SO much in floor yoga at first, and weirdly aerial helped me understand it 😅🩷 In the hammock, you can offload some weight so your muscles learn the pattern without freaking out.

Even if you don’t do aerial, you can mimic that support idea:

- Use blocks under hands in down dog

- Use a wall for warriors

- Use straps so you’re not forcing range

The goal is control + breath. Shaking just means your stabilizers are waking up ✨

Cami

Lia, I’m really glad you asked this here 🫶💜 Shaking during yoga poses is something sooo many people experience, and it doesn’t mean you’re failing. It often means you’re trying, your body is adapting, and you’re listening.

A few gentle reminders:

- You’re allowed to rest at any time 🤍

- Modifications are part of yoga, not a “lesser” version 🌸

- If embarrassment shows up, place a hand on your heart for a breath and remind yourself: “I’m safe.” 🥹

If anything feels scary or painful, please ask the teacher after class or check with a professional. You deserve to feel supported in your practice 💕
