What yoga poses help with digestion?

Mister.Yoga — Wellness & Gentle Yoga

Lia

Hi everyone 💜 I’m pretty new to practicing consistently and I’m trying to figure out what yoga poses help with digestion. I get that heavy/bloated feeling especially after dinner (and sometimes when I’m stressed), and I’d love a short routine I can do at home that feels safe and not too intense.

I’m not looking for “miracle cures,” just real-life suggestions: poses, breathing, when to do them (before/after eating?), and anything you’ve personally noticed helps. Also: are twists actually good for digestion, or is that just something people say? Thanks!

Anaya

Dear Lia, digestion is not only in the belly—it's also in the nervous system. When the breath becomes calm, the prana flows smoothly, and the digestive fire (agni) can do its work.

For gentle support: Apanasana (knees to chest), Balasana (child’s pose) with slow breathing into the lower abdomen, and a soft twist like Supta Matsyendrasana. Twists can encourage circulation and awareness around Manipura chakra (solar plexus), but do not force them. Let the exhale guide you.

Practice 1–2 hours after eating, or do only breathwork right after meals (slow nasal breathing, longer exhale). If symptoms are frequent or painful, it’s wise to speak with a healthcare professional.

Gio

Ok digestion yoga is SUCH a vibe 🥰✨ If you’re bloated/stressed, go for gentle + chill, not “workout yoga.”

My go-to mini flow:

- Cat-Cow (like 1–2 mins) 🐈🐄

- Knee-to-chest (both knees, then one at a time)

- Supine twist (both sides)

- Child’s pose + slow breaths

- Legs up the wall to downshift 🧘‍♀️

Twists can feel amazing, just keep them comfy. I like doing this in the evening like 2 hrs after dinner. If you get reflux, skip deep forward folds right after eating.

Ravi

Do not practice on a full stomach. Wait.

Sequence:

1) Vajrasana. Sit tall. 2–3 minutes. Nose breathing.

2) Marjaryasana–Bitilasana. 10 slow rounds.

3) Apanasana. Knees in. Exhale fully.

4) Jathara Parivartanasana (supine twist). Shoulders stay down.

No collapsing chest. No strain in neck. Twists come from thoracic rotation, not the knees. If pain, stop.

Teresa

Sweet Lia, bloating + stress often go together, so you’re already on a kind path by asking 💗😊

In yin, I love:

- Supported Child’s Pose (bolster/pillow under the belly) 😌

- Reclined twist with a pillow between the knees

- “Caterpillar” (a very gentle forward fold) only if it feels soothing

- Legs up the wall with one hand on belly, one on heart 🌙

Breathe slow and soft, like you’re rocking your belly from the inside. And please be gentle with yourself—if it’s persistent discomfort, checking with a professional is totally okay 🙏💞

Fede

Twists “detoxing” you is mostly influencer fairy dust. Real yoga isn’t posing for Instagram 🙃📸

That said, gentle movement + relaxing your stress response can help your gut feel less like a balloon. Cat-cow, knees-to-chest, an easy supine twist, and chill breathing. Don’t wrench yourself into a pretzel for “digestion.”

Also: if you’re constantly bloated, maybe look at sleep, stress, and food habits instead of buying another “gut cleanse” program 😅

Marta

Following because same!! 😭💗 I always feel awkward doing twists in class… like am I supposed to breathe in the twist or hold my breath?? 😅

Also dumb question: is it ok if my belly kinda squishes in knees-to-chest? And do you do this on an empty stomach only? I’m scared I’m doing it wrong 🙈

Nico

Digestion is strongly tied to parasympathetic tone. Yoga that drops HR and improves HRV tends to help “rest-and-digest.”

Practical stack:

- 5 minutes nasal breathing with long exhale (e.g., 4s in / 6–8s out)

- 8–10 minutes: cat-cow, supine knees-to-chest, supine twist

- Optional: legs up the wall to shift vagal tone

I avoid intense vinyasa/hot classes close to meals because it can worsen reflux for some people. If bloating is frequent, track triggers (late meals, alcohol, poor sleep). Not medical advice—just pattern recognition.

Luna

okieee digestion yoga = tummy vibes 🌸🍵✨ i do it when the moon is like “rest bestie” lol

poses that feel like clearing sticky energy:

- baby pose (child’s) with a pillow 💗

- sleepy twisty (reclined twist) 🌙

- knees huggg (apanasana) 🥺

- cat cow for the spine wiggles hehe

and i put a little crystal near my mat (citrine = solar plexus glow) 💛 not saying it’s science but the vibes are immaculate 😭✨

Simo

Not gonna lie, hot yoga makes my gut feel “reset” sometimes because the heat + sweat forces me to breathe and move everything. BUT if you’re talking immediate digestion after dinner, hot class is not it.

At home: gentle twists + core compression (knees-to-chest) + slow breathing works. If you want a little intensity, do a short set of wind-relieving pose, then a long savasana. And hydrate—especially if you’re doing anything heated.

Elena

Hi Lia 💜 If anyone reading is pregnant (or possibly pregnant), please be extra gentle. Deep twists and strong abdominal compression aren’t recommended during pregnancy.

For digestion support in a prenatal-safe way: side-lying rest, cat-cow, seated supported side bends, and very mild open twists (more through the upper back, no “wringing” the belly) 😊

Slow breathing is your best friend. And if there’s persistent discomfort, always check in with your midwife/doctor 🌸

Dario

Digestion is where they try to keep people heavy—low frequency food, constant stress, and screens blasting you with noise. When you twist and breathe, you’re not “massaging organs,” you’re restoring the body’s natural signal.

Focus on the navel center. Slow nasal breathing. Twists done softly. You’ll feel the third-eye clarity improve too because the gut-brain channel wakes up. Ancient practices knew this long before modern wellness trends.

Zenio

Soft breath.

Soft belly.

Let the twist be kindness.

Vale

From a former “lift heavy, ignore feelings” person 😂: digestion gets wrecked when I’m tight + stressed.

What helps me:

- Cat-cow (spine mobility)

- Supine twist (easy, controlled)

- Happy baby (gentle, not yanking) 🙌

- Deep squat hold with support if your hips allow

I do it on rest days or evenings. If you’re super bloated, keep it chill—no aggressive core work.

Chiara

For digestion-focused yoga at home, I love a calm “evening reset” routine on a comfy mat (a grippy one makes everything feel safer) 🕯️💜

My favorites: knees-to-chest, reclined twist, and supported child’s pose with a bolster/pillow. Add slow breathing and dim lighting and it feels like a mini spa.

Also: practicing 1–2 hours after dinner feels much better than right away, at least for me ✨

Mira

Beloved one, digestion is deeply connected to the navel center. In kundalini traditions we work with prana and apana to harmonize elimination and assimilation.

A gentle practice:

- Long Deep Breathing (through the nose)

- Apanasana to invite apana vayu

- A soft seated twist (Ardha Matsyendrasana variation) with mantra on the exhale

You may also explore chanting “Sat Nam” slowly to settle the mind-body field. Keep it subtle—no strain, no force. If symptoms persist, seek qualified support.

Pippo

My favorite digestion pose is “lying down and regretting my life choices” 😭😂

But for real: knees-to-chest works, and the reclined twist is like wringing out a towel… except the towel is your stress. Just don’t crank it like you’re opening a stuck jar 😅

Rina

Hi Lia, if you want something very gentle (or if you’re at a desk a lot), chair yoga can help you feel more comfortable.

Try:

- Seated belly breathing (hands on abdomen, slow exhale)

- Seated cat-cow (hands on knees, gently arch and round)

- Seated twist: sit tall, turn softly, keep both sit bones grounded

- Seated knee lifts one at a time (slow and easy)

Always move within comfort. If you have ongoing digestive issues, it’s worth checking in with a clinician.

Asha

In Ayurveda we often support digestion with routine + warmth. Yoga can help, especially gentle poses that settle vata (stress/airiness) and support agni.

Poses: Vajrasana after meals (a few minutes can feel grounding), apanasana, and a soft reclined twist. Pair with warm sips (ginger or fennel tea, if it suits you) and slower eating.

If bloating is constant, consider discussing it with a professional—sometimes it’s stress, sometimes it’s food sensitivities, sometimes something else.

Teo

Ok but like… how fast can I get flexible enough to do those deep twists that “massage the organs”?? 😤🔥😂

If deeper = better, what’s the fastest routine? Daily? Twice a day? I’m trying to speedrun this bloating situation lol

Iris

For me the biggest digestion change came when I stopped treating it like a “fix” and started treating it like a nervous system thing 🌿

When I’m anxious, my stomach is a mess. A few minutes of child’s pose + slow breathing + a gentle twist helps me feel safe again. Not perfect, but it takes the edge off. Also doing it at night (quiet room, low light) makes it easier for my brain to settle 🥺🫶

Paolo

The tradition would point you first to how you live and breathe, not only to shapes. In the Yoga Sutras, steadiness and ease (sthira-sukham) matter—especially for practices aimed at calming.

For digestion, gentle asana and pranayama can support relaxation and reduce stress reactivity. Twists and forward folds are fine when practiced without strain and at an appropriate time after eating.

You might view the “digestive routine” as a small practice of pratyahara: turning inward, softening sensory overload, and letting the body do its natural work.

Ricky

I swear when I was in Bali on retreat my digestion was like… perfect 😭✨ Morning yoga, coconut water, no doomscrolling, it just hits different.

For poses: supine twist, knees-to-chest, and a long savasana. Do it at night with candles, and like put your phone away ok. Also breathwork 4-7-8 is amaazing even tho I always forget the count lol.

Sara

What’s the evidence.

Yoga may help via stress reduction. Any studies on yoga for IBS or functional bloating.

Poses are fine. But claims like “detox” need sources.

Ari

If you ever get the chance to try aerial, the hammock is AMAZING for gentle decompression and twists 😍🪽

A supported reclined twist in the fabric feels super safe because you’re not forcing anything, and you can relax your belly. Even a little supported “cocoon” breathing can calm the whole system.

Not saying it’s a cure, but for stress-bloat it’s chef’s kiss ✨

Noemi

Lia, you’re not alone at all 💜🥺 This community has so many people dealing with the same stress-bloat loop, and you’re doing a kind thing by listening to your body.

A gentle, safe combo most people tolerate well is: cat-cow → knees-to-chest → reclined twist → child’s pose → a few minutes of quiet breathing. Keep it comfy, never painful, and give yourself permission to stop anytime 🫶✨

And if the bloating is frequent, intense, or comes with other symptoms, it’s totally valid to get it checked with a professional. You deserve to feel well 💗
