What yoga poses help with anxiety and panic?

Mister.Yoga — Anxiety & Calm Practices

Lia

Hi everyone 🌿 I’ve been dealing with anxiety for a while, and lately I’ve had a couple of panic-y moments (tight chest, racing thoughts, feeling like I can’t get a full breath). I’m not looking for a “cure,” just something safe I can do at home when I feel myself spiraling.

What yoga poses help with anxiety and panic? I’ve tried Child’s Pose and it sometimes helps, but other times I feel restless and can’t stay still. I’m also not very flexible and I get embarrassed even practicing alone because I feel like I’m “doing it wrong.”

If you have a small sequence or a few poses + breathing cues that calm your nervous system, I’d love to hear them. And if there are poses to avoid when you’re feeling panicky, please tell me too. (Also: I am talking to a therapist, just want extra tools.)

Ananda

Dear Lia, thank you for sharing so honestly. When anxiety rises, the prana (life energy) becomes scattered and the mind follows it. We bring it back down, back into the body, through grounding and slow exhalation.

Try a gentle set: Sukhasana (easy seat) with palms on the lower belly, then Balasana (Child’s Pose) or, if restless, a slow Cat–Cow. After that, Viparita Karani (legs up the wall) is very soothing for the nervous system. Breathe like this: inhale softly through the nose, exhale longer than the inhale, as if you are smoothing the mind. Feel the exhale travel down toward Muladhara chakra (root), creating safety.

If panic is strong, avoid intense backbends or long breath retentions. And always remember: yoga supports, but if symptoms feel overwhelming, it is wise to continue with professional support as you are doing.

Zoe

Ok Lia, been there. Anxiety brain is LOUD. Here’s my go-to “nervous system reset” mini flow (super beginner friendly):

1) Legs up the wall (3–8 min) — put a pillow under hips if comfy.

2) Reclined butterfly (soles of feet together) — hands on belly + chest.

3) Seated forward fold (bend knees a lot!) — don’t chase the stretch.

4) Child’s pose OR puppy pose at the wall if child’s feels claustrophobic.

Breath cue: inhale 4, exhale 6 (no forcing). Longer exhale = “hey body, we safe.” 🫶✨

Also: if panic hits, skip spicy stuff (fast vinyasa, intense backbends). And if you ever feel dizzy, come out, sit up, sip water. You’re not doing it wrong, you’re learning. 💗

Rocco

Use simple postures. Control the exhale.

1. Tadasana at wall. Feet parallel. Jaw relaxed. Exhale slow.

2. Uttanasana with knees bent. Hands on blocks or thighs. Neck free.

3. Adho Mukha Svanasana with hands on wall. Spine long. Do not collapse.

4. Supta Baddha Konasana. Support knees.

5. Viparita Karani. Neutral neck.

Breathing: nasal. No breath holding. Exhale longer. If you feel pressure in chest, stop and sit.

Marisa

Oh honey, I’m glad you asked 🤍 Anxiety can make the body feel like it’s “buzzing,” and yin is wonderful for melting that down slowly.

My sweet little yin set (use pillows/blankets, be comfy!):

- Supported Child’s Pose (bolster under chest) 3–5 min 😌

- Reclined twist (knees on a pillow) 2–3 min each side 🌙

- Legs up the wall 5–10 min ✨

- Then one hand on heart, one on belly, and whisper to yourself: “I am here. I am safe.” 💗

If stillness makes you more anxious, do a few gentle Cat–Cows first to “arrive.” And if panic feels intense or frequent, keep leaning on your therapist too 🥰🙏

Hot take: “anxiety yoga” isn’t a magic pose you buy from an influencer’s reel. Real yoga isn’t posing for Instagram 😘

But yeah, the basics help: legs up the wall, child’s pose, slow forward fold, and actual breathing (long exhale) instead of dramatic “aesthetic” inhales.

Also if you’re mid-panic and some teacher told you to do a deep backbend to “open your heart,” maybe don’t. 🙃 If it’s serious, call a pro. Yoga is support, not a substitute.

Vale

Following because SAME 😭 I get anxious and then I’m like “am I breathing right??” and then I panic more 😅

Question: when people say “legs up the wall,” do you need to have straight legs? Mine don’t go straight and my hamstrings scream. Also what mat do you use? I have a cheap one and I slip and then I feel dumb 🙈

Child’s pose sometimes makes me feel like I can’t breathe… is that normal? (I’m also in therapy, just trying to learn tools) 💛

Nico

For anxiety/panic, think autonomic nervous system: you’re trying to downshift sympathetic and increase parasympathetic tone. Poses that are low effort + longer exhales tend to help HRV.

Protocol I use at night for sleep + anxiety prevention: 5 min legs-up-the-wall, then 2–3 min supported reclined butterfly, then 3–5 min diaphragmatic breathing with 1:2 inhale:exhale ratio. If you track wearables, watch resting HR drop.

Avoid intense hot sessions when already wired, and avoid breath holds if you’re prone to panic. If panic episodes are frequent, pair this with professional care (CBT, etc.) and make sleep/caffeine timing non-negotiable.

Liaaaa ok so when anxiety hits my vibes go like *bzzzz* 😵‍💫💗 I do “grounding yoga” + crystals lol

Poses that feel SAFE to me:

- child’s pose with a fluffy blanket (instant cocoon 🥺)

- legs up the wall (I imagine all the stress draining out)✨

- seated forward fold with knees bent (no pain!!)

And breathe like you’re blowing out birthday candles but softly 😮‍💨 Also I hold my rose quartz or smoky quartz and set an intention like “my body is safe.” Moon days = extra gentle pls 🌙🔮

Gio

I know this thread is about calming, but I’ll be real: hot yoga saved my mental endurance. When my mind wants to spiral, 60–90 minutes of controlled discomfort + sweat is like a reset button.

That said, if you’re in an active panic moment, don’t jump into a 40°C room. Start with calm stuff: legs up the wall, supine twist, and slow breathing. Then, on stable days, build tolerance with a consistent practice. The confidence you get from staying present while uncomfortable carries over.

Hydrate, electrolytes, and if heat makes you dizzy/anxious, skip it.

Sara

Lia, sending you a big calm hug 🤍 If there’s any chance you’re pregnant (or trying), go extra gentle and prioritize positions that don’t compress the belly and that feel safe.

For anxiety/panic, I love:

- Side-lying rest with a pillow between knees 😌

- Supported child’s pose (knees wide, bolster under chest) 💛

- Seated breathing with one hand on heart, one on belly

- Legs up the wall can be lovely, but keep it comfortable and come out slowly.

Avoid strong twists, intense backbends, and any breath retention. And if panic symptoms feel scary, please check in with your healthcare team too 🙏✨

Lele

Panic isn’t just “stress,” it’s the nervous system reacting to frequencies around you. We’re living in an overstimulated field. Ancient practices knew this.

Grounding poses help because they pull your awareness out of the mind-loop and back into the body: child’s pose, forward folds, legs up the wall. Add humming on the exhale (vibration) to disrupt the loop.

Also reduce input: screens, Bluetooth, constant noise. Your third eye can’t rest when the signal is polluted. Keep it gentle though—if it feels intense, get support from a professional too.

Edo

Exhale.

Feel the floor.

One pose.

One breath.

Repeat.

Pietro

As a former “just lift heavier” guy: yoga helped my anxiety mostly through downregulating after training. Mobility + breath = game changer 🧠🫁

Stuff that helps me when I’m revved up:

- Legs up the wall (or feet on couch) 5 min

- Supine twist 1–2 min each side

- Happy baby (gentle!)

- Then box breathing-ish but with longer exhale (I do 4 in, 6 out)

If you’re shaky, skip deep backbends and anything that spikes your heart rate. And if panic is frequent, keep the therapy going—tools stack. 💪🧘

Giada

For anxiety days, I go “soft ritual” mode: dim light, lavender tea, and a super comfy setup. A good mat honestly helps you feel supported (I love a thick grippy one), plus a bolster/pillow for supported poses 💜✨

Poses: legs up the wall, supported reclined butterfly, and a very gentle seated forward fold with knees bent. Keep it cozy, not intense.

Also, don’t underestimate how calming it is to have a little corner that feels pretty + safe (blanket, candle, maybe a playlist). It makes consistency easier 🕯️🧘‍♀️

Beloved, for anxiety and panic we stabilize the pranic currents and calm the mind’s waves. Begin with grounding, then mantra.

Try this gentle practice:

- Easy Pose, spine tall. Hands on knees. Long deep breathing for 3 minutes.

- Then a soft version of Shavasana with one hand on the navel.

- Add mantra: silently repeat “Sat Nam” with the breath (Sat on inhale, Nam on exhale). Let the sound current organize the mind.

Avoid strong kriyas, rapid Breath of Fire, or long kumbhaka (retention) if you are prone to panic. If symptoms feel unmanageable, please keep working with your therapist/doctor—yoga is a companion on the path.

Fede

My anxiety loves when a teacher says “just relax” while my hamstrings are filing a formal complaint 😅

Real talk: legs up the wall is the only pose where my brain is like “ok fine” for a minute. Also child’s pose, unless I’m in the mood to feel like a folded lawn chair 😂

If you want a non-scary combo: cat-cow x10, then legs up wall, then flop into savasana and pretend you’re a peaceful potato. 🥔🧘

Nina

Lia, you can absolutely use yoga for anxiety in a very gentle, accessible way—even without getting down on the floor.

Try this seated sequence:

1) Sit tall, feet flat. Feel both feet press down.

2) Shoulder rolls, slow and easy.

3) Seated cat-cow: inhale lift chest, exhale round the back.

4) Seated forward fold: slide hands down thighs, stop where you can still breathe comfortably.

5) Finish with hands on belly, slow exhale.

If dizziness or chest discomfort appears, pause and return to normal breathing, and seek medical help if needed. Gentle and steady wins here.

Ari

In Ayurveda, anxiety often looks like aggravated vata (air + space): restless mind, light sleep, fluttery chest. The antidote is warmth, routine, and grounding.

Yoga poses: child’s pose with support, seated forward fold (soft), legs up the wall, and gentle twists. Pair with slow nasal breathing.

And outside the mat: warm meals, a little ginger or cinnamon tea, and reducing cold/raw foods in stressful periods can feel stabilizing. Not medical advice, just traditional support. If panic is intense, definitely continue with your therapist too.

Teo

Ok but like… which pose is the FASTEST fix?? 😭 If I do forward folds every day will I stop feeling anxious sooner? Also how long until I can do a full pancake lol

I tried legs up the wall and it’s chill but it feels too easy?? I wanna “progress” 🥲🔥 Any challenge version that still helps anxiety?

Iri

Hi Lia 🤍 I’m super introverted and I used to get panic sensations (especially the “can’t breathe” feeling). Yoga didn’t erase it, but it gave me a button to press when I start spiraling.

What works for me:

- If I’m restless: 1 minute cat-cow + slow neck rolls

- Then: legs up the wall (or calves on a chair) for 5 minutes

- Then: one hand on chest, one on belly, exhale longer and count it

Also, I stopped forcing child’s pose when it felt too closed-in. Switching to a supported forward fold on a couch felt safer. You’re not alone 🌙🫶

Tommi

In the Yoga Sutras, the mind’s turbulence is described as vritti—movements of consciousness. Practice (abhyasa) and non-attachment (vairagya) steady those movements, but gently, over time.

For anxiety and panic, choose postures that support pratyahara (turning inward) without strain: child’s pose, supta baddha konasana, viparita karani, and savasana with a simple breath anchor. The key is not “perfect form,” but cultivating a steady witness to sensations.

Also, it’s very yogic to seek wise support—therapy and community are forms of steadiness too.

Ludo

When I had anxiety I started doing a soft morning flow + journaling and it literally change my life. In Bali retreats we do legs-up-the-wall, supported childs pose, then a long savasana with a playlist 🌿✨

Also try 4-7-8 breathing (but dont force it) and a digital detox like no phone for 1 hour after waking. Your nervous system will thank you.

If panic is really intense pls talk to a profesional too, yoga is amazing but its not everything 🙏

Mauro

Which poses, specifically, have evidence for anxiety? Any RCTs?

Mechanism is probably breathing + relaxation response. Poses that allow slow exhale: legs up wall, supported supine poses.

If panic attacks: avoid hyperventilation. Keep breathing normal. If symptoms are severe, get medical evaluation.

Alba

If you ever get the chance to try aerial (with a qualified instructor), it can be SO calming for anxiety because the hammock supports you like a little nest 🥹🪽

My “anti-anxiety” favorites:

- Aerial supported savasana (you’re basically floating)

- Hammock forward fold with feet on the floor (gentle decompression)

- Supported seated cocoon + slow breathing

For panic-y days, I keep it low to the ground and super supported. And if inversion sensations trigger you, you can skip those and still get the calming effect.

Cami

Lia, thank you for trusting us with this 💜 You’re doing something really brave by building a little toolkit for your anxiety. And the fact that you’re in therapy too is such a strong, caring choice for yourself 🫶🥺

A very gentle “I’m spiraling” routine:

- Put a hand on your chest + belly and name 3 things you can see (grounding) 🌿

- Cat-cow slowly for 5–8 breaths

- Legs up the wall (or calves on a chair) for 3–5 minutes

- Reclined twist with a pillow

And please remember: if a pose makes you feel worse, you’re allowed to stop immediately. No shame, no “failing.” We’re here with you 🤍✨
