what size yoga mat should I buy?

Mister.Yoga — Yoga Gear & Beginners

Giada

Hi everyone 🙋‍♀️ I’m new-ish to yoga and I’m trying to buy my first “proper” yoga mat (not the super thin gym one I’ve been using). I mostly do YouTube classes at home (a mix of gentle flow + some beginner strength stuff) and I’m 170 cm tall.

My issue is I keep sliding off the top during down dog or when I stretch my arms overhead. Also my apartment is small, so I don’t want a huge mat if it’s unnecessary. What size yoga mat should I buy for comfort without wasting space? And is width worth upgrading too, or is length the main thing? Thanks 🥹

Ravi

Dear Giada, choose a mat that allows your body to rest without contraction. For most people, length should be your height plus a little space so the breath can flow freely in savasana and in long stretches (around 10–15 cm extra). Width matters when your arms open and your chest expands—if you feel “contained,” the heart space tightens and the inhale becomes shallow.

A common “standard” mat is enough for many, but if you often step off during downward dog, a slightly longer mat will calm the mind because you are not constantly adjusting. This supports steadiness (sthira) and ease (sukha). Notice: when your foundation is stable, the energy can rise more naturally through the spine and chakras.

Marta

Ok Giada bestie, mat sizing is SUCH an underrated glow-up 🧘‍♀️✨ If you’re 170 cm, I’d go extra-long if you keep falling off (like 183 cm / 72”). It’s not “huge,” it just gives you that little buffer so your flow feels smoother.

Width: if you have broader shoulders or you like wide-legged forward folds, a wider mat (like 66–71 cm) is chef’s kiss 🙌 But if your space is tiny, do long first, then upgrade width later. Also make sure you’re not sliding because of sweat—some mats are slick at the start 🥲

Enzo

Standard: 173 cm x 61 cm.

If your hands or feet leave the mat in Adho Mukha Svanasana, you need more length.

Rule: mat length = your height + 10–15 cm.

Width is secondary. Only increase width if your stance is correct and you still step off.

Buy a stable mat. Not too soft.

Paola

Oh Giada, I hear you 🤍 In yin we stay a long time in shapes, so comfort and “room to settle” matters so much 😌✨

At 170 cm, I’d personally choose a slightly longer mat (around 180–185 cm) so when you reach overhead or relax in savasana you’re not worried about edges. If you love wide butterfly or dragon pose, a wider mat can feel like a little safe island too 🥰

And for small apartments: you can roll it right back up, or store it behind a door. Choose what makes you exhale more deeply 😊🫶

Dario

Get a mat that fits your BODY, not your influencer aesthetic 😏 Real yoga isn’t posing for Instagram, it’s doing the work when nobody’s clapping.

Size? If you’re stepping off, your mat is too short. Simple. And if you’re constantly slipping, it’s not “your vibe,” it’s the mat (or sweaty hands) 🙃

Buy a normal mat or a slightly longer one. You don’t need a runway-length pastel cloud to “manifest” a down dog.

Lia

Following because SAME 😭🫶 I’m 168 cm and I always end up with my hands off the mat in downward dog and then I feel so awkward like I’m doing it wrong 😅

Do you think it’s better to get a longer mat or is it more about my alignment/spacing? Also… is it normal to feel embarrassed in class when you have to keep adjusting? 🥺

Nico

From a performance angle: mat size affects consistency. If you’re constantly micro-adjusting position, you’re adding cognitive load and breaking flow—bad for nervous system downshift and HRV gains.

For 170 cm, I’d go ~183 cm length. Width depends on your biomechanics (shoulder width + stance). Wider mat can reduce stepping off during mobility work, which helps you keep reps clean.

Also consider grip vs sweat: if you do higher intensity sessions, a towel on top can be better than buying a giant mat. Better adherence = better breathing rhythm = better sleep later.

Sere

Giadaaaa ✨🌙 ok so like… your mat is your little portal, right?? if you keep “falling off” it’s like your aura wants more space to expand 😭💗

I’d pick an extra-long one (183-ish) so your energy can stretchhh in savasana and your crown chakra is not like *bonk* on the edge 😂 and if you’re a starfish stretcher (me), wider is cute too!!

Also check if you’re buying around a full moon bc vibes are wild lol 🔮🧘‍♀️

ValeHot

If you ever plan to do hot yoga: grip and sweat management matter more than an extra 5 cm. You’ll be drenched, your hands will slide, and you’ll want a mat that stays planted.

Size-wise, I like extra-long because in a heated class you drift without noticing. Standard width is usually fine unless you’ve got a super wide stance.

Pro tip: bring a mat towel. You don’t “detox,” you just sweat a lot—still feels amazing though.

Chiara

Hi Giada 💜 If you’re currently pregnant or planning soon, a little extra space can feel so reassuring, especially for wider-knee positions and slower transitions 😊

In general, for your height, an extra-long mat (around 180–185 cm) is a comfy choice. Width is nice if you want more stability, but not mandatory. If your room is small, prioritize a safe, non-slip surface rather than the biggest size.

And if you ever practice during pregnancy, consider checking with your healthcare professional and choosing gentle classes 🌷🫶

Omar

People don’t talk about it but mat dimensions matter because they interact with your energetic field. The “standard” sizes are basically commercial defaults, not designed around resonance.

If you’re stepping off the mat, that’s not random—your body is trying to align its grid. Extra length gives the nervous system less boundary stress, which keeps the third eye calmer during longer holds.

Also: some cheap mats off-gas. Air out anything with strong chemical smell. Your breath is part of the practice.

Zenio

Long enough to forget it.

Wide enough to breathe.

Then, practice.

Rocco

As a former “I-only-lift” guy: get the mat that keeps you consistent 😂🏋️‍♂️🧘‍♂️

At 170 cm, I’d pick 183 cm length. When you’re doing lunges, hamstring stretches, or mobility flows, that extra space stops you from resetting every rep.

Width is nice if you’re doing wide stance stuff (Cossack-ish mobility, warrior variations). But if your apartment is tight, go longer first. Also don’t get something TOO squishy or your balance work gets weird 😅

Elena

Giada, if you want it to feel luxe and not cramped, slightly longer is the move 🥰✨ For 170 cm, 180–183 cm is that sweet spot.

Width depends on your vibe and space: 61 cm is classic, 66 cm feels “premium studio” and gives you room for side angle without your hand falling off.

And yes—mat color + outfit synergy is real 😅💜 A pretty mat honestly makes me practice more.

Anaya

Beloved Giada, choose a mat that supports stillness in posture so prana may move unobstructed. In Kundalini, we often sit, kneel, and hold mudra—so the mat becomes your sacred base.

For your height, an extra-long mat helps you remain within your “container” during relaxation and breathwork. As you practice pranayama, let the spine be long and the breath be soft; constant repositioning pulls the mind outward.

If you chant, place a small cloth at the top of the mat as a dedicated space. The intention matters as much as the dimension.

Fede

Get a mat big enough for: 1) downward dog, 2) the dramatic corpse pose after 12 minutes, 3) the moment you realize your hamstrings are made of cement 😂🧱

Jokes aside, if you’re stepping off, go a bit longer (like 183 cm). Wider is optional unless you flail like a starfish (I do) 😅🧘‍♀️

Teresa

Hi Giada. For home practice, safety and stability come first.

If you’re practicing standing poses, a slightly longer mat can help you feel secure when you step back into lunges or downward dog. Standard width is usually enough, but a bit wider can be more comfortable if you want extra room for your feet.

And if you ever practice near a chair for balance, make sure the mat is flat and not curled at the edges to reduce slipping.

Iris

Such a good question, Giada. In Ayurveda we love routines that feel supportive, not stressful—so a mat that’s too small can create little irritations that build up over time.

For your height, I’d choose a slightly longer mat. Width is optional, but if you often open the hips (goddess, wide fold), wider can feel grounding.

And a small ritual: after practice, sip warm water or ginger-fennel tea (if it suits you) and let your breath settle. The mat is only one part of the calm you’re building.

SimoFlex

Ok but if I buy a bigger mat will I get flexible faster? 😂🔥

I’m trying to speedrun splits and I keep sliding off the front when I’m doing deep lunges. I’m thinking extra-long + wider so I can go HARD without resetting 😤

Giada if you’re stepping off, upgrade length asap. Time is gains 🫡

Nina

I used to practice in a tiny room too, and having the right mat size weirdly helped my anxiety 🫶🌿 Like… fewer little interruptions meant my brain stopped scanning for “mistakes.”

I’m close to your height and a slightly longer mat made a big difference, especially in savasana and any pose with arms overhead. Width wasn’t as important for me.

Also please don’t feel embarrassed about adjusting—everyone does, even if they pretend they don’t 🥺✨

Lorenzo

In practical terms: choose the size that reduces distraction. In philosophical terms: you’re removing obstacles to steadiness.

Patanjali describes yoga as the settling of the fluctuations of the mind; if your practice is repeatedly interrupted by running out of mat, the mind is pulled outward. A mat slightly longer than your height supports continuity.

Standard widths are fine, but if your hands routinely land off the mat in standing poses, consider wider. Let the equipment serve the practice, not become the practice.

BaliLuca

When I was in Bali on retreat I learn’d that having a longer mat just makes your flow more smooth and like… intentional 😅🌴

I’d say go 183cm if you can, it’s still easy to roll up. Wider is nice if you do lots of side angles. Also choose a color that makes you wanna unroll it every morning, trust me it help’s the routine 🙏✨

Alba

Height-based sizing is reasonable. Length = height + ~10–15 cm. Helps reduce repositioning.

Width: only if you regularly step off laterally. Otherwise standard is fine.

Grip matters. Sliding is often surface friction, not size. Any data on your current mat thickness/material?

Gioia

Not to derail but if you ever try aerial yoga, the “mat size” becomes way less stressful because you’re literally floating 😂🧚‍♀️

For regular floor yoga though: extra-long is great if you travel across the mat during flows. Width is a comfort upgrade. Also, if your space is small, measure your practice spot first (I learned that the hard way) 😅✨

Sofia

Giada you’re doing great, seriously 🫶🥺 This is such a normal beginner problem and it doesn’t mean you’re “bad” at yoga at all.

If you’re 170 cm and keep sliding off, a slightly longer mat will help you feel more settled and confident. If space is tight, you can absolutely prioritize length over width for now.

And just a gentle reminder: this is your safe space. Adjusting, pausing, and making things comfy is part of the practice 💜✨ You’ve got this!
