Hi everyone, I’m pretty new to the breathwork side of yoga and I keep hearing the term “kriya breathing” in classes and on videos. Sometimes it sounds like a specific breathing pattern, other times people talk like it’s a whole practice or ritual.
For context: I do yoga 2–3 times a week (mostly gentle vinyasa), and I started paying more attention to breathing because stress has been hitting me hard lately (tight chest, racing thoughts). I tried a “kriya breath” video once and it felt intense and a bit confusing—like I wasn’t sure if I was doing it right.
So… what is kriya breathing in yoga? Is it just pranayama, or something different? And is it okay for beginners to try, or should it only be done with a teacher?
