How do I start a yoga routine?

Mister.Yoga — Beginner Yoga

Giada

I really want to start a yoga routine but I keep overthinking it. I’m not super flexible, I sit a lot for work, and my shoulders/hips feel stiff. I’ve tried random YouTube videos, but I never know what to do next day so I quit after a week.

What’s a realistic way to start a yoga routine from scratch? Like how many days a week, how long, and what kind of yoga? I’m not trying to become a pretzel, I mostly want to feel better in my body and calm my mind. Also: do I need any gear besides a mat, and how do you avoid feeling awkward doing it alone at home?

Ananda

Begin gently, Giada. Yoga is not a performance; it is a daily meeting with yourself. Start with 10–15 minutes, 4–5 days a week. Consistency is the real practice.

Begin with simple breath awareness (3–5 minutes). Let the inhale rise like energy through the spine, and the exhale soften the shoulders and jaw. This calms the nervous system and supports steady energy flow through the chakras.

Then choose a small sequence you repeat for 2–3 weeks: Cat-Cow, Child’s Pose, gentle Down Dog (knees bent), low lunge, a simple seated twist, and a short Savasana. End with a hand on the heart and one on the belly, thanking the body. The routine becomes a safe inner rhythm, and the mind stops bargaining.

Marty

Ok bestie, keep it simple so you actually stick with it 😌✨

Start with: 3 days/week, 15–20 min. That’s it. No “I’m gonna do 60 min daily” glow-up fantasy (been there lol).

Pick ONE style for a month: “gentle flow” or “yoga for beginners.” Repeat the same 2–3 videos so your body learns the moves and you stop feeling awkward. Add a 2-min breathing reset at the end (inhale 4, exhale 6) for the calm vibes.

Gear: mat + maybe 2 blocks (or thick books) + a blanket. Also: awkwardness is normal. Put on a playlist, dim the lights, and pretend you’re doing self-care, not homework 😂🧘‍♀️

Ravi

Start small. Be exact.

3 sessions per week. 20 minutes.

Warm-up: joint rotations. Neck. Shoulders. Hips.

Breath: inhale through nose. Exhale through nose. No mouth breathing.

Sequence: Tadasana. Uttanasana with bent knees. Adho Mukha Svanasana. Bhujangasana low. Balasana. Simple seated forward fold. Savasana.

Rule: no pain in knees, wrists, lower back. Align. Repeat the same routine for 30 days.

Silvia

Oh Giada, you sound just like so many of us at the beginning 💜😊 The secret is making it feel nourishing, not like another task.

If you’re stiff from sitting, try yin yoga 2–3 evenings a week: 20–30 minutes, very gentle, long holds (2–4 minutes) with pillows/blankets. Butterfly pose, sphinx, supported child’s pose, and legs-up-the-wall are a sweet start 🥰🕯️

Then add one short “wake up flow” on another day (10–15 min). You don’t need fancy gear—just a mat and cozy supports. And if you feel awkward at home, light a candle, put on soft music, and remind yourself: this time is just for you 🤗✨

Step 1: stop watching “Day 1: become a yoga goddess” influencer content 🙃 Real yoga isn’t posing for Instagram with a matching set and a ring light.

Start a routine like an adult: pick 15 minutes, 3x/week, same basic sequence, and do it even when it’s not ✨aesthetic✨.

If you want calmer mind + less stiff body, do beginner mobility-style yoga. Boring? Yes. Effective? Also yes. And please, for the love of knees, don’t force splits because some influencer said “open your hips in 7 days” 😂

Luna

Following because SAME 😭🙏 I started last month and I’m still confused.

Can I ask: is it normal to shake in down dog? 😅 And I get super out of breath like I’m doing cardio lol. Do you breathe in each pose or just… whenever? Also mats: do I need a thick one? Mine slides on the floor and I feel embarrassed even alone 😂

I’ve been doing 10 min videos and I feel like it “doesn’t count” but maybe it does?? 🥺

Nico

If the goal is “feel better + calmer,” build a routine like a habit stack.

Minimum effective dose: 12–20 min, 4x/week. Track adherence, not perfection. I like: 5 min nasal breathing + 10 min mobility flow + 2 min downshift (long exhales).

Yoga can help with parasympathetic activation (better sleep quality for some people), HRV trends, and recovery—especially if you do it in the evening and keep intensity low. If you’re also lifting, yoga on rest days or after training as a cooldown works.

Gear: grippy mat, two blocks. Optional: strap for hamstrings. Don’t chase “advanced” poses; chase range + control.

Mimi

ok ok so like… start ur yoga routine when the vibes are ✨aligned✨ hehe 😭💗

i do “moon-friendly yoga” (aka gentle flow) esp near full moon when my brain is LOUD 🌕🔮 put a rose quartz near the mat, drink water, set intention: “i’m safe in my body”

do 10–15 mins first!! child’s pose, cat-cow, low lunge, then legs up the wall (literally angel mode) 🪽

and if u feel awkward just remember ur aura is learning!! manifest consistency not perfection 💞

Dario

If you want a routine that REALLY makes you feel something: hot yoga 2–3x/week will lock you in. You show up, you sweat like crazy, you leave with a clear head.

Start with beginner-friendly heated classes if available. Bring a big towel and water. Pace yourself—heat can humble you fast.

That said, for a home routine, you can mimic it with a warm room + steady flow, but don’t overdo it. Consistency beats going nuclear once and quitting.

Paola

If there’s any chance you’re pregnant now or planning soon, you can absolutely start a yoga routine—but keep it gentle and supportive 💜🤰

A safe beginner structure (for most people): 15–25 minutes, 3–4 days/week. Focus on breath, posture, and relieving tension (cat-cow, supported child’s pose, side stretches, gentle squats holding a chair).

If you are pregnant, it’s best to choose “prenatal yoga” specifically and check in with your healthcare provider, especially if you have any discomfort, dizziness, or complications. And please avoid strong twists, deep backbends, or overheating 🫶✨

Orfeo

Yoga is a routine, yes… but it’s also a way to retune your system. Most people are stuck in low-frequency stress patterns all day (screens, noise, fear). Breath + posture changes your signal.

Start at sunrise or late night when the “static” is lower. 11 minutes of slow nasal breathing, then spinal movements (cat-cow, gentle twists), then stillness.

As you practice, you’ll feel the third-eye pressure sometimes—don’t panic, just observe. Ancient methods were coded for awakening, not just stretching.

Edo

Begin.

Breathe.

Return tomorrow.

Vale

I came from CrossFit and yoga saved my shoulders/hips 😅🏋️‍♀️🧘‍♀️

For a beginner yoga routine, treat it like mobility training: 3x/week, 20 min. Repeat the same flow so you can measure progress (less tension, smoother breathing).

My staples: thoracic openers, lunge variations for hip flexors, hamstring work with a strap, and lots of calf/ankle love. Finish with 2–3 min breathing.

Also, don’t go max-range when you’re cold. Yoga can be sneaky—“feels fine” until tomorrow 😂

Claudia

A routine is easier when it feels like a little ritual ✨🧘‍♀️

I’d do 20 minutes, 4 days a week: a beginner flow + 3 minutes of stretching and a short savasana. Set your space: soft light, tidy corner, maybe a diffuser.

Gear-wise, a good mat matters (grippy + cushioned). A strap and two blocks make everything more comfortable and you’ll progress faster without forcing. And yes, cute leggings help motivation 😅💜 (not required, but they don’t hurt).

Kiran

To start a yoga routine, begin with your prāṇa. Without breath, the practice is only gymnastics.

Daily, 11 minutes is enough. Sit in Sukhasana, lengthen the spine, and practice long deep breathing. Then add a gentle kriyā: cat-cow to awaken the spine, followed by a short mantra like “Sat Nam” to anchor the mind.

Move slowly and keep awareness at the navel center and along suṣumṇā (the central channel). If emotions arise, soften your gaze and return to the breath. If you ever feel overwhelmed, reduce the time and keep it simple.

Fede

My yoga routine started with: “I will do a relaxing stretch.”

Ten minutes later I’m in a pose called something innocent like “happy baby” while looking like an unhappy shrimp 🦐😂

Real tip: pick 15 mins, same time every day (or 3x/week), and accept you’ll be wobbly. The wobble is the practice. Also: blocks are basically cheat codes 😅

Rina

You can start a yoga routine in a very accessible way, even if you feel stiff from sitting.

Try 10–15 minutes on a sturdy chair, 3–5 days a week: seated breathing, gentle neck/shoulder rolls, seated cat-cow, ankle circles, seated twists (very mild), and a forward fold with hands on thighs. End with feet grounded and slow breathing.

This builds consistency and confidence. If you ever feel pain or dizziness, pause and consider asking a qualified instructor for guidance.

Asha

A routine works best when it supports your digestion and daily rhythm (dinacharya).

Morning (if you can): 10–20 minutes of gentle movement + breath to wake the body. Evening: a slower practice to settle the nervous system. Pair it with warm water or herbal tea (ginger, fennel, or cumin are classic choices) and a simple, warm meal when possible.

If you feel very tight, do grounding poses: child’s pose, low lunge, seated folds with a strap. Avoid forcing—Ayurveda values steady, sustainable change.

Simo

Ok but like… what’s the FASTEST way to get flexible? 😤🔥 I want a yoga routine that actually gives results, not “in 6 months you might touch your toes” lol

If I do 30 mins every day, can I unlock splits in a month? 😅 Any specific poses that speedrun hamstrings/hips?? Also is it bad if I feel intense stretch pain or is that “progress”??

Irene

I started yoga because anxiety was making me feel trapped in my own body 🥺🌿

What helped me build a real routine was making it tiny and private: 10 minutes after work, same playlist, phone on do-not-disturb. I did the same beginner flow for weeks so I didn’t have to “decide” anything.

The breathing part mattered more than the poses for calming my mind—slow exhale, relaxed jaw. And if I skipped a day, I didn’t shame myself, I just came back the next day 🫶✨

Tommaso

From the perspective of yoga philosophy, the question isn’t only “how do I start?” but “how do I return?”

In the Yoga Sutras, practice (abhyāsa) becomes steady when done for a long time, without break, and with sincerity. So a realistic routine is one you can repeat even on average days.

Try: 15–20 minutes, 4 days/week. Keep it simple: breath, a few foundational postures, then a brief stillness. The goal is not achieving shapes, but reducing agitation of the mind and improving clarity in daily life.

Brando

Ok so what helped me start a yoga routine was making it like a whole morning ritual 🌴✨

I do 20 min flow + 5 min breathwork, then like no phone for 1 hour (digital detox vibes). If you can, do a weekend retreat sometime, its literally life changing and you come back so motivated.

Also set ur mat out the night before. Sounds silly but it works. And drink water, your body will thank you so much 😌🧘‍♂️

Giorgio

How many days. How long. What outcomes.

I’d start with 3x/week, 20 minutes. Track sleep, stress, and stiffness over 4 weeks.

Any evidence-based recommendations for yoga improving posture or sleep? Links to decent studies or systematic reviews would be useful. Short answer format, please.

Ari

If you get bored with regular routines, aerial yoga can make you fall in love with practice 😍🪽

The hammock supports you so beginner stretches feel safer (like supported backbends, inversions with less pressure). It also helps with shoulder opening and traction vibes.

For a standard at-home yoga routine though: do 2 days gentle flow + 1 day longer stretch. And if you ever try aerial, do it with a trained instructor first—setup matters.

Elisa

Giada, you’re not behind and you’re not “bad at yoga” just because you don’t have a routine yet 🫶💜 This is such a normal starting point.

A realistic plan: 15 minutes, 3 days a week, same simple video/sequence for 2 weeks. When that feels easy, add a 4th day. Keep a “minimum version” for hard days (even 5 minutes counts!) 🥺✨

Also, awkward at home is so real—maybe it helps to tell yourself: nobody is watching, and your mat is a safe zone. We’re all learning here 🤗🌷
