Hi everyone, I’m pretty new to yoga (about 2 months, mostly YouTube and one studio class). I keep hearing “breathe” and “use your breath,” but I’m honestly confused about what “correct” breathing is supposed to be.
Sometimes I hold my breath without noticing, especially in planks or when I’m trying to balance. Other times I breathe super fast and then I feel dizzy or like my chest is tight. In class the teacher said “inhale up, exhale down,” but in some poses I’m not sure when to inhale vs exhale, and I end up out of sync.
Should I always breathe through my nose? Is it normal to have louder breath like that ocean sound? And if I can’t breathe smoothly in a pose, does that mean I’m pushing too hard?
Any practical tips for breathing correctly during yoga would be amazing, especially for beginners who get anxious about doing it wrong.
