Hi everyone. I’ve been practicing yoga on and off for about a year (mostly YouTube flows + a few studio classes). Lately I’ve been feeling like my body is holding on to old stuff… like stress from past experiences I don’t even think about every day, but it shows up as tight chest, jaw clenching, and random anxiety.
I’ve seen videos where people talk about “trauma release” in hip openers or during deep breathing and sometimes they cry in class. Part of me is curious and hopeful, and part of me is honestly scared of opening something I can’t handle.
So… can yoga actually help with trauma release? If yes, what styles or practices feel safer (yin, restorative, gentle hatha, breathwork)? And if you’ve experienced emotions coming up on the mat, how did you deal with it without feeling overwhelmed?
I’m not looking for a miracle cure, just trying to understand if yoga can be a supportive tool alongside therapy or other help. Thanks for keeping this a safe space.
